Three years on since the release of their debut album On The Inside, Leeds’ trio Gotts Street Park are back with new single ‘Some Birds Don’t Fly’.
An intimate and downtempo blues-infused ballad featuring British-Canadian singer-songwriter Matt Maltese on vocals, ‘Some Birds Don’t Fly’ is a song about unrealised potential through the metaphor of flightless birds.
Speaking on the song’s inspiration and how its genesis arose from a situation close to home, Maltese said, “This song reflects on the life someone very close to me had, and the choices they had to make because of it. Sometimes there are things we can do to make our lives better, but sometimes the hand you get is just a bad hand. And the helplessness that brings for those around them is a difficult thing to accept. The notion of a bad hand in life made me think in turn of flightless birds.”
Elaborating on how the track came together, Gotts Street Park said, “Josh already knew Matt from writing together and Joe recently played guitar on Matt's latest album, so his name came up pretty quickly for artists we wanted to collaborate with. He came up to Leeds on a dark, rainy Thursday in winter and ‘Some Birds Don’t Fly’ was the result. We love Matt’s way with words and his dreamlike approach to writing. So, when the track was jammed out in Leeds, we knew instantly that with his woozy, laid back vibe he’d be perfect to write over it.”
