Genre-blending duo Cry Club have shared new single ‘Retaliate’, the latest taste of their just announced third long player, High Voltage Anxiety, which arrives March 27, 2026 (pre-order here and pre-save here)
The track is a dystopian, industrial electro punk nightmare described by vocalist Heather Riley (they/them) as “a torch-and-pitchfork party soundtrack”.
Cry Club take a crack at the current cost of living crisis and wealth disparity impacting people across the globe. “It fits in really well thematically with our other newer singles in the sense that we’re trying to desperately outrun the feeling of hopeless apathy that’s easy to sink into when shit feels really bleak,” says Heather, calling back to previous singles ‘High Voltage Anxiety’s dissection of digital fatigue, and ‘This, Forever’s rallying cry to fight for a better world.
The duo’s upcoming album is self-recorded, self-produced and self-engineered, allowing Heather and guitarist Jonathon Tooke (he/him) to spend more time on creating a piece of art that fulfils them both musically and lyrically.
Speaking on the album, Heather says, “This is truly the most ‘us’ we’ve ever sounded, it’s wildly satisfying to feel like we’re in total control of everything and be so happy with where we’ve ended up. While there’s a lot of fury and frustration across the record, we also got to acknowledge how much we’ve grown and the people who have touched our lives along the way. We are (as we’ve always been) so angry because we love and care about this world so much, and that love drives us to demand better from the people trying to do harm to what we’ve all built.”
Guitarist Jonathon Tooke adds, “Every time we’ve released a record so far, I’ve been able to pin down a clear ‘here’s what it is’ for myself. God I’m Such a Mess (2020) was a post-punk band playing pop songs, Spite Will Save Me (2023) was us revisiting all the different types of rock music we loved as teenagers. But now with High Voltage Anxiety I see it as ‘industrial pop’ - the intensity of punk and industrial music, but with our constant north star of being massive fans of pop song structures.”
