Ahead of the release of Baker Boy’s sophomore album, DJANDJAY, the First Nations talent has shared the dynamic and powerful new single, ‘THICK SKIN’.
Once again showcasing his experimental side, ‘THICK SKIN’ is a frantic punk-fuelled track written in response to the 2023 Indigenous Voice Referendum. Highlighting the racism present in Aussie society while also celebrating strength and unity, the single is another winner from Baker Boy.
“It wasn’t anger at the result as much, I think it was the way mob became a topic of conversation and mottos like ‘if you don’t know, vote no’ encouraging ignorance,” Baker Boy says. “It highlighted the everyday experience of being Yolŋu, being Indigenous in this country and that hit me hard.”
An anthem of survival and solidarity, the track features some of the great First Nations voices under the banner of Blak Choir – Thelma Plum, Emma Donovan, Kee’ahn and Jada Weazel.
“When we got the choir together to record, I had goosebumps the whole day. Hearing the finished track blew my mind,” explains Baker Boy.

Inspired by his culture and demonstrating Baker Boy’s growth both as an artist and a man, DJANDJAY brings together 15 tracks, including ‘THICK SKIN’ and the previously released singles ‘LIGHTNING’, ‘PEACEKEEPER’ and ‘FREAKOUT’.
Executive producers Pip Norman and Rob Amoruso, the album is named after Baker Boy’s late grandmother and a Yolŋu spiritual figure and is shaping up as his most personal effort yet.
“This is my strongest, most powerful work yet,” adds Baker Boy. “Pip and Rob gave me the space to be honest — to share my message without fear. Having them there was like a protective shield. It let me get vulnerable and real.”
‘THICK SKIN’ by Baker Boy is out now. DJANDJAY arrives on October 10 via Island Records and Universal Music. Pre-order here.
