Congratulations on your latest single release, ‘UNLUCKY!’ Talk us through this track.
Ben: ‘UNLUCKY!’ is about learning to roll with the punches and realising that sometimes the universe doesn’t always give you what you want but might be giving you what you need instead. The music itself goes through multiple phases that represent different parts of this learning process; it was a really fun challenge to try and make it all fit together.
Over the years, have you had any unlucky band or gig moments that you made the most of?
Heath: Our band thrives on turning unlucky situations into positive ones. We’ve had a few keyboard players over the years; however, this ultimately led to us linking up with Daisy, which has put everything in its right place.
On a smaller scale, we’ve accidentally started shows without members on stage, tried to get drinks at the bar mid-show whilst no staff were there to serve us, rendering an awkward intermission. Those variabilities at our shows keep it really interesting for everyone, and it gives the audience a bit more than just watching and experiencing our set.
You’re launching the track on July 11 at ODDIO. Why was this the right space for the celebration?
Will: We always want to make every event we throw something special and memorable. Our goal is to blur the line between a party and a gig; ODDIO felt like a perfect place for that. Beyond it being a beautiful space, there’s something magical about it being tucked away in Bowden yet so lively when they're open. The band have some special set plans for what is going to be a memorable night on the 11th.

Kara Manansala and Kleió (DJ) are on support. What will they bring to the night?
Will: Arguably the most exciting thing about this show is having Kara & Kleió joining us. Both are some of the most talented artists we not only have the pleasure of knowing but are definitely what's going to make this night special; they are the showstoppers. This is definitely one of those shows where you want to be there from the start and not miss a thing.
What vibe are you expecting from the crowd?
Dec: We hope to see a lot of high energy and dancing; we want to bring something exciting into a space that feels open and inviting to all that enjoy modern music & revel in what that means. Creating a special place for people to get involved and party is our bread and butter, so we hope they feel as engaged as us and ready when we start throwing our twists and turns at them.
If you could sum up this track in 3 words, what would they be?
Heath: "Dancing in rain”.
Recently, Broken Waves have played WOMAD and New Found Sound. How was the experience playing these fests?
Daisy: It was such an unreal experience. To be included in such well-known festivals with such a wealth of talent was entirely surreal, and it for sure was a bucket list item that we can now tick off. The festivals were such incredible opportunities for us to play our music to new audiences, with many of the people seeing us perform for the first time and listening with fresh ears. However, the part that stuck out to me most is that at both festivals, there were so many familiar faces in the crowd that continue to support us at each gig. I’m really humbled that we have such a devoted fanbase that consistently show up to our shows, and I am grateful that I have been able to form incredible connections with them, too.
What’s next for Broken Waves?
Ben: We have lots of new songs in the pipeline that we are still refining and reworking. We've been trying to push our creativity and experiment with new instruments and approaches. Our live show has a bunch of new surprises as well which we are excited to keep showing off.
Don’t be ‘UNLUCKY!’ and miss Broken Waves single launch with Kara Manansala and Kleió at ODDIO on Saturday 11 July. Tickets on sale via moshtix.com.au.
