Australian musical collective Ukulele Death Squad have shared their latest bombastic single ‘Cooee’.
Taken from their upcoming EP, Essentially My Life Is A Disaster, out 15 May, the track is a groovy burst of Ukulele Death Squad charm, exploring escapism and the desire to live a life less ordinary.
“We started writing this song after going on a hike through Morialta National Park on Kaurna Country yelling out ‘Cooee’ to a bunch of school students who were on an excursion,” explains Alice Barker, co-writer and lead vocalist on the track.
“It explores the contradictions of modern life, the push and pull of wanting to be alone whilst also not feeling alone. Wanting peace but being surrounded by overstimulation—and the paradox of urban isolation versus the profound connection found in nature.”
Barker reflects on “the way it feels like you're part of something bigger when you hear the echo of ‘Cooee’,” paying homage to the sacredness of Australian landscapes and Indigenous Country.
To celebrate the release of Essentially My Life Is A Disaster, Ukulele Death Squad are embarking on a world tour spanning Australia, Germany and the UK.
The Australian leg of the tour begins in Adelaide at Lion Arts Factory on Saturday 16 May and continues with dates at Sydney’s Metro Social on Saturday 30 May, Melbourne’s Howler on Saturday 13 June and Brisbane’s Crowbar on Saturday 27 June.
