It’s been a long time coming, but American indie vets The Mountain Goats are finally returning to Australia and New Zealand in 2026.
The seven-date tour marks the band's first visit to Australia in nine years and their first trip to New Zealand in 16 years.
The tour announcement coincides with The Mountain Goats revealing their twenty-fourth album, Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan, is dropping Friday 7 November via the band’s own label, Cadmean Dawn Records (pre-order/pre-save here).
Produced by the Mountain Goats’ multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas, Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan is a concept album telling the story of a small crew shipwrecked on a desert island. The record features collaborations with The Replacements’ Tommy Stinson, harpist Mikaela Davis, Tony Award-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda and the band’s new bassist Cameron Ralston.
The Mountain Goats have also shared the first single from Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan, the five-minute wonder ‘Armies of the Lord’.
The band’s tour begins with two shows in New Zealand at Auckland’s Double Whammy on Thursday 10 April, followed by Wellington’s Meow on Friday 11 April. The Mountain Goats then fly to Australia for five shows at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on Sunday 13 April, Brisbane’s Princess Theatre on Monday 14 April, Adelaide’s The Gov on Wednesday 16 April, Melbourne’s Fourm on Thursday 17 April and Perth’s Freo Social on Saturday 19 April.
Pre-sale kicks off at 10 am AEST on Thursday 11 September. Register here. General on-sale takes place at 10am AEST on Friday 12 September via handsometours.com.
