Early ‘00s indie dance just won’t quit.
Earlier this week, Teenager, the cult project formed by PANU’s Nick Littlemore and Ladyhawke’s Phillipa ‘Pip’ Brown, returned with new single, ‘A.A.’
Taking us back to the glorious days when indie sleeze and upbeat disco dance ruled the airwaves, ‘A.A.’ is a sonic synth delight featuring the delightful voices of both Littlemore and Brown.
In an Instagram post accompanying the release of ‘A.A.’, Littlemore wrote: “There was no scene to begin with and there won’t be one going forth, we are all isolated, we are all dejected but weirdly thats what links us all, connected by the universal suffering, everyone is touched by that and no one is spared.”
Not only have Teenager shared a new track, but the duo have revealed their much anticipated sophomore album is on the way, with Fourteen, the follow-up to the band’s 2006 debut, 13, arriving sometime this year.
Littlemore formed Teenager in 2004 with the then-emerging Brown on guitar. The duo’s debut album, 13, was recorded over three years in studios across the globe, including Sydney, London, Paris and New York.
A bubbling dance-punk cauldron that’s certainly of its era, 13 featured an array of big-time guests, with Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo and Steve Shelley on guitar and drums respectively, alongside session muso Thierry Muller on synths. Littlemore also roped in Sleepy Jackson’s Luke Steele, The Presets’ Kim Moyes and the iconic Rowland S. Howard to contribute to the record.
13 was a minor hit and produced the singles ‘Alone Again’ and ‘Pony’. Since its release in 2006, both Littlemore and Brown have gone on to have great success with other musical projects.
Littlemore teamed up with the aforementioned Steele and formed Empire of the Sun, one of the biggest electronic acts on the planet, who are responsible for the chart smash ‘Walking On A Dream’.
Brown was no slouch, breaking through as a solo artist under the moniker Ladyhawke, with her self-titled debut album coming in at #1 on the New Zealand Album Chart. She’s since released three more albums and continues to perform both here and in NZ.
The announcement of a new Teenager record is a welcome surprise and one we at The Note can’t wait to hear.
Teenager’s ‘A.A.’ is available to stream here. Fourteen will be released later this year.
