Local student rock band MJDC are one of nine bands to make the national finals of Harwyn Rocking the Nation, Australia’s biggest battle of the bands competition.
Comprising Immanuel College Year 12 students Xavier (lead vocals, guitar), Lyla (bass guitar, vocals), Jacob (drums) and Jaxson (guitar), MJDC scored their opportunity to battle it out at the finals in Melbourne thanks to their two original rock songs, ‘Alt-Man’ and ‘And I Cry’.
Established this year, Harwyn Rocking the Nation is a showcase of the nation’s best emerging musical talent. Entry was open to students in Years 7-12 from Australian Independent and Catholic schools. Bands had to have between two and six members and fall into the rock/pop genre. Hundreds of emerging bands sent their music in, with MJDC wowing the judges with their dynamic sound.
Having been selected to perform at the Grand Final in Melbourne on Sunday 10 August, MJDC will compete for a huge prize that includes a $100,000 Harwyn Music Pod – a cutting-edge music studio for their school – and a $25,000 musical instrument voucher that the band can spend on themselves.
“We’re incredibly proud of MJDC and their achievement,” said John Thompson, Principal of Immanuel College “Their passion, creativity, and teamwork have taken them to a national stage, and we’re thrilled to see them represent our school and community.
“It is a testament to our music program and staff at Immanuel where we support students wherever their passions lie.”
The Grand Final of the Harwyn Rocking the Nation comp will be judged by a panel of music industry professionals and streamed nationwide.
