Few things change your perspective on life than travel. Seeing the world and those who live vastly different existences from our own can be an eye-opening experience. This is something Adelaide-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist My Chérie discovered after a three month Euro trip.
Inspired by the places she visited and the people she met, My Chérie’s ‘Life is’ encapsulates the emotions and reflections from her travels. Staying in hostels and sharing stories with strangers, My Chérie found herself focusing on the struggles travellers and the greater society encounter – loneliness, connection, uncertainty and more.
Written during her 30-hour trip home, ‘Life is’ signifies a growth in My Chérire’s songwriting and a change in direction, with the track straying from the bedroom pop giddiness of her early work to an avant-garde rock sound recalling PJ Harvey and Kate Bush.
“People all over the world carry the same weight on their shoulders. Not fully knowing why we’re here, worrying about the future, holding onto the past, searching for connection,” My Chérie shares.
“I met people I may never see again, but their stories changed me. I wrote ‘Life is’ in a moment of clarity on my flight home—it all just poured out.”
