Daniel Cullen-Richards, vocalist of Adelaide alt-metal outfit alt., has announced his departure from the band just a week after the release of their concept EP Nevermore.
The news has come as a shock to many, with alt. receiving high praise for Nevermore, a concept EP set in 2073 in a world ravaged by war, corruption and greed.
“It is with a heavy heart and deep gratitude that we announce the departure of our vocalist Dan from alt.,” the band announced in a statement last week.
“We would like to extend a massive thank you to Dan for all the time, energy, and creativity he’s put into everything we’ve done together. We’ve had some unreal moments making music, playing shows, writing, laughing, and enjoying the ride along the way. There are a lot of great memories in there that we will always be proud of together.
“Life and music both have a way of pulling people in all sorts of different directions sometimes, and we respect Dans decision in moving on and doing what feels right.
“We all wish him and his lovely wife Jess, all the best in the future.
“We are excited to share what’s with you all very soon!”
Cullen-Richards also shared his own statement about his reasons for leaving the band, which you can read below.
“Since 2019, this band has been such a huge part of my life. I’ve been incredibly lucky to share this journey with amazing bandmates and to feel the constant support and love from our family, friends, and fans. Together, we’ve achieved things I never thought possible, and I’ll always be grateful for every moment.
“This hasn’t been an easy decision. As we’ve looked toward the future, it’s become clear that our creative visions no longer fully align, and I feel it’s the right time for me to step away. I leave the band in very capable hands and have nothing but respect and support for what the boys will continue to build.
“My final show with alt. will be our EP launch in Adelaide on June 20th. I’d love to see as many of you there as possible to celebrate everything we’ve shared and give this chapter the send-off it deserves.
“This isn’t the end of my journey in music, not even close. I’m excited for what comes next and would love for you to be part of it. If you’d like to follow along, you can find me at @dcr.adl
“Thank you again for everything. I’ll see you in June, and I can’t wait to share what’s next with you all.
“Keep in touch x”

alt.’s final EP with Cullen-Richards, Nevermore, is out now via Resist Records (AU) and SharpTone Records (ROW). The six-track release was produced, mixed and mastered by Callan Orr (Dream On Dreamer, Hands Like Houses) and leans “into ideas of systemic control, imbalance of power and the boiling point that follows suppression.”
Since forming in 2019, alt. have released their 2020 EP, dysfunctional and 2022 debut album ABEYANCE, which received glowing reviews. The band have amassed millions of streams, toured alongside the likes of Don Broco, Enter Shikari, Saosin, Dayseeker, Karnivool, Cog and Windwaker and performed at festivals including Froth and Fury Fest and Unify Off the Record.
To celebrate the release of Nevermore, alt. are throwing a launch party at Lion Arts Factory on Saturday 20 June, making this the final chance fans have to see Cullen-Richards as frontman. Tickets on sale now via moshtix.com.au.
