Emerging Adelaide outfit Swapmeet have shared their fourth single ‘Halfway’, taken from the quartet’s upcoming debut studio album Mount Zero, which drops Friday 17 July via Winspear.
Taking its name from the road sign passed across many an interstate drive, Mount Zero acts as a glimpse into another world. “Mount Zero is a place you pass but never go,” says the band’s Maxwell Elphick. “It became a symbol for people we’d see but never meet. When you’re always in a different city and trying new things, there are a lot of experiences you observe but never get to fully explore.”
The quartet of Venus O’Broin (guitar, vocals), Joshua Doherty (bass), Maxwell Elphick (guitar, drums, vocals), and Jack Medlyn (guitar, drums, vocals) produced the record in collaboration with Armlock's Hamish Mitchell, crafting nine introspective tracks.
Following the previously released singles ‘I Know!’, ‘Sand’ and ‘2 C U’, the band’s latest is a delighfully hazy rocker that sounds like it’s straight out of the ‘90s. ‘Halfway’ continues Swapmeet’s impressive run of ear candy singles, with the band revealing the song “looks at the first confrontations with change. The first confrontations with loss, and every choice feeling like a mistake. When you finally realise things can’t truly ever return to how they once were.”
The track is accompanied by a music video directed by Mayah Slayter that shows the band performing in a rundown room in the country.
