The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has announced its class of 2024 with 16 new inductees.
The list of names revealed is impressive, with the likes of Cher, Ozzy Osbourne and Mary J. Blige all getting the call-up.
Cher’s initiation comes after a 60-year wait and not without a little drama. The ‘Believe’ singer has been vocal in her displeasure at having never been nominated for the prestigious honour. Her most recent tirade came when she appeared on The Kelly Clarkson Show last December.
“I’m not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You know what, I wouldn’t be in it now if they gave me a million dollars… I’m never going to change my mind. They can just go you-know-what themselves,” she said.
Peter Frampton is another artist who has had to bide his time before finally scoring a nomination. Frampton has been making music for almost as long as Cher, with his live album, Frampton Comes Alive!, one of the highest-grossing albums of the 70s.
The late Jimmy Buffett also received his first nomination in the category of Musical Excellence while A Tribe Called Quest became the latest hip hop act to be acknowledged for their contribution to music.
Ozzy Osbourne gets his second award after first being inducted as a member of Black Sabbath in 2006 and legendary guitarist John Mayall, who’s 90, is getting his flowers after an incredible career spanning eight decades.
This 2024 class also includes R&B icon Mary J. Blige, American rockers The Dave Matthews Band, soft rock act Foreigner and soul pioneers Kool & the Gang.
Alexis Korner, Big Mama Thornton, MC5, Dionne Warwick, Norman Whitfield, and Suzanne de Passe round out the 2024 class.
The ceremony for this year’s event will be held at the birthplace of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio on Saturday, October 19. You can watch the event live on the ABC or stream it via Disney+.
