No 9 Karaoke Bar Transforms Into an Immersive Art Space This Month

Rooms in No 9 Karaoke are transformed into immersive art spaces in a bold Chinatown takeover as part of Open Space Contemporary Arts - Projects of the Everyday series.

There’s nothing better than belting out your favourite songs at karaoke, but this month No 9 Karaoke is offering punters something a little different.

For one night only on Thursday 30 April, 18 artists will take over the Chinatown venue’s eight rooms, transforming No 9 Karaoke into a multi-room contemporary art experience.

This free event is curated by artists Kim Munro, Yusuf Ali Hayat and Alice McCool, and according to the press release, reimagines “private karaoke rooms as intimate, site-specific art environments.

There will be new and existing works from local, national and international artists and filmmakers exploring themes such as identity, history and environments. Punters can discover something new in each room, with the interactive installation tapping into the energy of karaoke culture and nightlife.

“This project is about how we encounter place not just physically, but emotionally and collectively,” explains curator Alice McCool. “By working within a karaoke venue, we are inviting audiences to rethink familiar environments and consider the histories and memories that linger within them.”

This special project is part of Open Space Contemporary Arts (OSCA) state-wide SA artist commissioning initiative Projects of the Everyday – which supports artists to create experimental large-scale artworks in unconventional environments.

The commissioned artists are Valerie Berry & Ben-Hur Winter, Jesse Budel, Saluhan Collective, Jazmine Deng & Helium, Ellen Steele, Astrid Pill and Jason Sweeney, while there will be screenings by national and international filmmakers Razan AlSalah, Malena Szlam, Bryce Kraehenbuehl and Komtouch Napattaloong.

“OSCA is so excited to bring over 18 artists together for an unprecedented art experience responding to themes of place, space and belonging. We ask you to join us for a night like no other,” says OSCA Artistic Director, Paul Gazzola.
