Grace Robinson Returns With New Single 'driving'

Grace Robinson has shared new single 'driving', the third track taken from the Naarm/Melbourne singer-songwriter's debut album choppy, out Friday 13 November via AWAL Recordings.

Following the previously released 'harder than you think' and 'is it over?', Robinson's latest is propelled forward by her melodic vocals and jangly indie riffs and finds her ruminating on her experiences in the music industry and trying to "live in the moment" as an artist.

"In order to sustain a life in the music industry, you end up needing to do a million things just to stay afloat," Robinson says. "I'm not even sure if I'm the player or the game."

Written during what was meant to be a five-week trip off the grid on Bajawa, Flores, but instead turned into Robinson answering emails for most of the getaway.

"That trip was supposed to be about decompressing, and I ruined it by trying to keep every plate spinning from a hostel in Flores," she says. "It was only writing the chorus that I actually understood you're allowed to move slowly. You're allowed to swim in the ocean and just wait. Not everything has to happen all at once."

Dropping in November, choppy marks Robinson's first release under her own name. Recorded in five days at a Pakenham studio with her closest collaborators, choppy was produced by Alex Gorman (Angie McMahon) and mixed by Marcus Paquin (Julia Jacklin, Arcade Fire, Saya Gray).

After a decade working in the industry, including as a booker, directing an 80-voice choir, five years of jazz training at the VCA and fronting Naarm electro-soul outfit Empress, Robinson is excited to go out on her own, with choppy a coming-of-age record exploring ADHD, body dysmorphia, anxiety, success and more.

"It doesn't just sound like my album — it sounds like the people who carried me through making it," says Grace.
