Grace Robinson Announces Debut Album 'Choppy', Shares New Single 'is it over?'

Naarm/Melbourne singer-songwriter Grace Robinson has announced the release of her debut album choppy, out Friday 13 November via AWAL Recordings.

Robinson's choppy is a coming-of-age record that takes its name from her childhood nickname (thanks to her chubby cheeks), and finds Robinson discovering who she is through her experiences with ADHD, body dysmorphia, anxiety and success.

Produced by Alex Gorman (Angie McMahon) and mixed by Marcus Paquin (Julia Jacklin, Saya Gray), choppy was written over the course of 12 months and recorded in just five days at a Pakenham studio with Robinson's closest friends.

"It doesn't just sound like my album — it sounds like the people who carried me through making it," says Grace.

Along with the album reveal, Robinson has shared new single 'is it over?', which follows last month's 'harder than you think'.

Darker and more personal, 'is it over?' finds Robinson addressing body dysmorphia and her struggles embracing who she is.

"The title is a question," she says, "because I'm still working it out. It never actually mattered what my body looked like. At my smallest and at my biggest, I found ways to feel uncomfortable in my body. That's why I feel like it will never be over."

choppy is Robinson's first full-length LP under her own name (she's also the lead singer of the electro-soul band Empress), with the collection of tracks highlighting her jazz-trained voice over indie-rock instrumentation.

Despite only being in her mid-20s, Robinson has already co-written an ARIA-nominated jazz record, performed at Dark Mofo and played live alongside the likes of Middle Kids, Hiatus Kaiyote and Sampa The Great.

She's also one of the youngest booking agents at one of Australia's most respected agencies, but now it's time for her music to take centre stage.
