Gerling Celebrate 25th Anniversary of 'When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun' With Vinyl Release

Warner Music Australia are celebrating the 25th anniversary of Gerling's ARIA-nominated 2001 masterpiece When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun with a deluxe 2LP vinyl reissue that drops Friday 6 November.

Originally released in 2001, When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun thrust Gerling into the spotlight, with the album's 14 tracks seamlessly melding indie rock, house, classic disco and hip hop into a critically acclaimed record that featured collaborations with Kylie Minogue, Kool Keith, Solex and local experimental artist Inga Liljeström.

Despite only releasing two more albums and eventually breaking up in 2007, Gerling's When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun remains an Australian classic that inspired a generation of artists.

The first-ever vinyl release of When Young Terrorists Chase The Sun will be a double LP featuring beautifully reimagined artwork alongside five bonus tracks, including the long-lost studio version of live favourite 'Deep Fryer', an instrumental version of 'Brother Keith of Destructor Mountain', and remixes from Cornelius, Jacques Lu Cont and Riton.

Ahead of the vinyl release, Gerling's Darren Cross, Burke Reid and Presser released this statement:

"It was meant to be the year we released what was, at that stage of the game, our definitive GERLING album. What not many people know is that the record was actually finished and delivered to the record company early in the year. It was released first in Japan, on July 25, on Sony, and it was a roaring success. From there, we played the Fuji Rock Festival alongside Oasis, New Order, Neil Young, and Patti Smith. Coming back to Australia, we were completely psyched and buzzing—the Japanese audience loved the music. We had an extensive Regurgitator National tour lineup, with the album to drop during the tour. It was perfect.

"But the year was 2001 and the album was scheduled for its Australian release on September 16. Then September 11 happened and the entire Australian release was completely derailed. To say we were disappointed is a massive understatement, but like everyone else in the world, we were in complete shock. Because of the events, we had to change the artwork, tweak a few track titles, and delay everything. The rest is history.

"So, for this album to finally be released on vinyl for its 25th anniversary via Warner Music is genuinely special. Hopefully now, with the benefit of hindsight, people can see we were in no way affiliated with the atrocities in New York and can simply enjoy the music for what it was. We poured years of our lives into this record, creating the WYTCTS album in our very own GERLOG Studios, working with incredible producers like Magoo and Josh Abrahams to shine the album and tighten it up, and featuring amazing guest vocals from Kylie Minogue, Kool Keith, and Solex.

"Genre-less. Relentless youthful spirit. Punk indie, DIY, dance music. We thought this album was going to go down in history—and it did, just for very different reasons. Now, you can finally enjoy it on vinyl with special updated packaging. As a side note: Darren recreated the cover art to strip away any unintended political connotations, and Presser tweaked the gatefold artwork that was originally part of the Headzcleaner release. So, there you go. Enjoy it!"
