Sydney-based Eishan Ensemble have announced a national tour in support of their most recent album, Northern Rhapsody.
Released earlier this year in May, composer and band leader Hamed Sadeghi described the record as his “love letter to both Iran and Australia.” Across seven beautiful tracks, Eishan Ensemble address themes of transformation and connection, dissecting the emotion and cultural landscapes that emerge from living between two lands.
“Locals often describe Australia’s beauty through its soft sand beaches, coastal cliffs, and endless ocean views,” says Sadeghi. “But as an Iranian living here, I see it differently. It is the winding rivers, ancient rock formations, the smell of eucalyptus, and the vivid orange sunsets over rolling hills.”
Northern Rhapsody merges Iranian classical music with Persian poetry, all with a tinge of Australiana weaving through each composition.
“Of course, I have beautiful memories of Iran,” Sadeghi reflects. “It’s in my blood. Persian culture will always resonate: the rhythm of Tehran, the bustle of the bazaar, the memory of the Alborz Mountains. That’s home, too. But I could never have made this album in Tehran.”
He continues, “Northern Rhapsody brings these two places into dialogue. One is shaped by centuries of tradition; the other, by open skies, quiet encounters, and the friendships I’ve formed across Australia.”
Performing tracks from Northern Rhapsody on the tour, Eishan Ensemble’s first show takes place at MONA in Hobart on Friday 29 August. The seven-piece then performs at Sydney’s Riverside Theatre (Sunday 31 August), Geelong’s Platform Arts (Friday 5 September), Melbourne’s Hawthorn Arts Centre (Saturday 6 September) Adelaide’s Woodville Town Hall (Thursday 11 September), Kyneton’s Town Hall (Friday 12 September) and Wollongong’s Town Hall (Thursday 18 September), wrapping the tour up in the Blue Mountains at Springwood Presbyterian Church Hall on Saturday 20 September.
