Perfect Pair: Uraidla Brewery Purgatory Pilsener x ‘Silent Shout’ by The Knife

Tumblers and turntables at the ready…

TASTING NOTES

Uraidla Purgatory Pilsener: A staple of Uraidla’s core range, Purgatory Pilsener takes inspiration from the classic Czech-style beer that originated in the small town of Pilsen (Plzen) in 1842. Brewed using traditional Bohemian Saaz hops and local Pilsener malt, Purgatory is cellared for 42 days, resulting in a craft with a respectable 4.8% ABV. Floral aromas are paired with a sneaky pinch of spice, producing a brew that’s as hearty and hoppy as it is refreshing and raw. If this beer had a star sign, we’d say it’s a Gemini – the perfect partner for a parmi feed and a silver service evening packed with bold, enticing flavours.

SLEEVE NOTES

The Knife’s ‘Silent Shout’: The opening track to The Knife’s self-titled album, ‘Silent Shout’ is a brooding, mechanical beast that infiltrates your brain like an audio nightmare. The five-minute track unfolds as a pulsating dancefloor attack that never lets up, merging an anxiety-inducing beat with mind-altering synths. If there’s one song that captures the hedonistic chaos of Berlin’s cult nightclub Berghain, it’s this. The track ushered in a darker, scarier version of The Knife’s mature take on contemporary pop, serving as a menacing appetiser for what was to come on Silent Shout – one of the greatest electronic albums of the ‘00s.

THEY’RE PERFECTLY PAIRED BECAUSE...

On paper, these two seem like strange bedfellows. One’s a refreshing amber liquid with a bitter yet satisfying finish; the other’s an eerie, relentless blast of electronica. But when you enjoy them together, it starts to make sense. Alongside Berlin’s Berghain, ‘Silent Shout’ could be the soundtrack for Purgatory — sharing that cold, crisp vibe that’s just like a tasty pint of Uraidla’s Pilsener. Both come from bigger bloodlines: Purgatory Pilsner is the clean, refreshing cousin in the lager family, while ‘Silent Shout’ is a haunting, euphoric spin on electro-pop. And just like The Knife’s dark club anthem, once you’ve had a few Purgatory Pilsners, the dancefloor suddenly feels like your new best friend.
