Rose Tattoo Frontman Angry Anderson Dead At 79

One of Australia's great rock vocalists, Angry Anderson, has passed away at age 79.

Anderson, who was recovering from a recent heart attack, died while surrounded by loved ones on Monday evening. His family have released the following statement confirming his passing:

"It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Gary "Angry" Anderson on the eve of Monday 21 September 2026, surrounded by his loved ones here in Australia.  

"Angry was a devoted father, and much-loved bandmate, friend, and member of the wider music and entertainment community. His loss will be deeply felt by all those who knew and loved him both here in Australia and overseas.  

"The family and band members are asking for privacy at this difficult time and will not be giving interviews. We kindly ask that their wishes are respected as they come to terms with this devastating loss and take time they need to grieve.  

"We thank everyone for their prayers and messages of love and continued support.

Born Gary Stephen Anderson on August 5, 1947, Anderson had a passion for music from a young age, playing in several bands before finding his calling as frontman for hard rock outfit Rose Tattoo in 1976.

The band released five studio albums before breaking up in 1987, with their third record, Scarred For Life, hitting #11 on the ARIA Albums Chart and spawning one of their biggest hits, 'We Can't Be Beaten'.

Anderson also released a hit solo single in 1985, 'Suddenly', and played Ironbar Bassey in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.

He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1993 for his work in youth advocacy.

Rose Tattoo were about to embark on a run of European shows as part of their farewell tour before Anderson suffered a cardiac arrest.

Anderson is survived by his children Galen, Roxanne and Blaine.
