Miss Kaninna’s long-awaited debut mixtape BLACKPRINT is finally on its way, hitting streaming services on Friday 21 August via Soul Has No Tempo/AWAL Recordings.
The announcement of the much hyped project from proud Yorta Yorta, Dja Dja Wurrung, Kalkadoon and Yirendali sovereign woman and Naarm/Melbourne-via-lutruwita/Tasmania artist Miss Kaninna arrives alongside new single ‘HANDOUT’, which features the talented Jamahl Yami.
Self-produced at friendship studios on Wurundjeri Country with Nikodimos (Hiatus Kaiyote, Genesis Owusu) acting as executive producer, ‘HANDOUT’ has an old school hip hop vibe and offers fans another taste of what to expect from Miss Kaninna’s upcoming mixtape.
Miss Kaninna says of the track: “‘HANDOUT’ looks at themes of privilege of white ‘Australia’, it's about black power and reclaiming identity and rage, especially with the double standards of crime and prosecution in so-called ‘Australia’.
“I make music based off how the song is supposed to be and the song developed in an organic way, which - art based on a feeling and if it becomes a single, that’s a bonus. I’ve been wanting to make a track with my brother Jamahl (Yami) since I met him 3.5 years ago. Jamahl is like my older brother and would tag along to all the stuff he was going to when I first moved to Melbourne and we were jamming and making a lot of music together and we were finally presented with an opportunity to work together on my project - Jamahl’s voice and cadence leant itself to the first verse and the rest is history. I knew he belonged on this because of how much he’s supported me so far. Nikodimos is an incredible producer and musician, I had been working with him for a couple of weeks getting to know him, to see what kind of music he could make for me and my people; he was picking up all sorts of instruments throughout the sessions.”
BLACKPRINT merges hip hop with funk, soul, R&B, punk, rock, grunge and more and features a star-studded lineup of guests, including Kobie Dee and Jamahl Yami.
Speaking on the title of her six-track mixtape that also includes the previously released single ‘MOB TIES’, Miss Kaninna says, “We know we’re the key to start of civilisation, we're literally the blueprint and we don't care if white people agree or not, we aren't gonna wait for you.”
