Millah's Final Issue

After 14 issues with The Note, Millah is moving on to new ventures. We reminisce with Millah on some of the highlights (and lowlights) of the last couple of years.

What's been your personal highlight?

It sounds cheesy but… writing this mag every month! Then getting to come into the office and see the crazy team that pulls this wonderful mag together every day. Then going to local shows on the weekend and being approached by talented musos who send me their tracks that I get the honour of writing about! It never gets lost on me when someone tells me they quoted The Note's praise of them in their press kit.

Favourite gig in your time here?

This is like asking a parent who their favourite child is!!! I have also gone to (on average) about 1.5 gigs a week since being here and have seen so many bands at the same rotation of venues, so gigs often meld together in my brain. I will say though, my top eight sets from SA artists have been The Tullamarines, TOWNS, LOLA, The Fuss, Caressa, Molly Rocket and Any Young Mechanic. Magic, all of them.

What’s been your favourite piece to write for The Note?

God. There's been so many greats. BBNO$ was the most gracious, giving and hilarious interview I've done. Chatting with Dean from Ball Park Music was an honour and a huge pinch-me moment because that band has been so pivotal in soundtracking my life. The piece also flowed out of me in such a natural way. I surprised myself by absolutely LOVING talking to Joel from Wolf Alice; he made me such a fan of theirs by being such a beautiful, passionate man. M.I.A. was a challenge to write as we had such an intense interview, but I'm forever so proud of how that piece turned out. I loved chatting with PASH, The Jungle Giants (twice), Keli Holiday, aleksiah. I’m sorry. That’s too many.

A lowlight…

Zara (The Note's OG Editor) called it best when she said every morning after the music awards, whether it's the SA Music Awards or the AIR Awards, the fluro light bulbs in the HWR office are craaazy for hangovers.

A funny memory…

The chaos that was 2025 Harvest Rock. Everything went wrong that day, from interview times being pushed to missing mic cords, tech failures and torrential rain that stopped the festival while we were mid-interview with Lime Cordiale. I have a fantastic memory of Olly, The Note's director and I sprinting between the fest and several office stores, shielding our equipment from the rain and trying to buy a specific audio cord that could not be found. Everything worked out brilliantly in the end, though!

One takeaway…

South Australia has the most special, unfathomably talented music scene. I have been so lucky to serve it.
