Gina the Synth Cat is starring in this year’s Adelaide Fringe! The show received heaps of hype interstate – so are you excited about performing to your home crowd?

Definitely! The Adelaide Fringe is the pinnacle of the [Australian] Fringe circuit. It’s the first opportunity I’ve had to make a show that fits a broader cultural arts audience instead of doing a DJ set at a festival. It’s a chance to step things up.

So, Gina... she’s this fearless kitty in space. What’s her story?

Gina is in space, and we follow a story that revolves around her planet. There’s been some great technological advancements there, but at the cost of their main resource. She goes out on a do-or-die voyage for her people – and we join her on this journey to save them.

What inspired Gina’s story?

I often babysit my friend’s cat, Gina. I was in McLarenVale and had grabbed myself some pizza and wine from Pizzateca. I set myself up in the studio, and the cat hopped on the table with me. That’s when the idea of Gina the Synth Cat was born. It’s spacey, it’s disco, and I’ve always enjoyed the idea of going on a journey with a concept album.

You’ve also collaborated with several artists on the show. What else can we expect?

It’s a performance of the concept album! But once I made the music, I started working with David Musch and Dave Court to see how we could bring the story to life. So, we’ve made a comic book, gotten the illustrations animated and formed this Adelaide dream team with six creatives. It’s very immersive – a happy marriage between audio and visuals.
