In the Green Room: Ledfly

Congratulations on your upcoming debut EP! Can you give us a bit of an idea of what's in store for us?

Thank you very much! We're stoked to finally get it out. This EP features five of our songs and, in true punk style, only goes for roughly 11 minutes. Our music is for people who love bands like Frenzal Rhomb, NOFX, Minor Threat and all the punk greats. The main goal of releasing this EP is for people to have a listen, hopefully come watch us play, and support local bands.

What inspired this collection of tracks?

These songs are about everyday life, internal struggles, the government, drinking beer and other good things! We wanted to write music that feels honest while still being fun and energetic. Every track has its own meaning, and the lyrics can be interpreted by the listener. 

What pulls you all to the punk genre?

The reason we play punk is because it's the music that resonates most with us out of any genre; simply for the passion, energy, community, intensity, musicianship and ethos behind it. I remember when we first discovered punk; for our drummer Austin, he connected with it for the technicality of the drumming, the community, and just how fun it is to play. Before I found punk, I was a huge metalhead and my dream was to become a crazy shredding guitarist like Eddie Van Halen or something. But it wasn’t until one day I realised I’d never given punk a try, so I put on a typical punk essentials playlist and the first song that played was 'Wasted' by Circle Jerks; it was like love at first sight.

I remember the first thing I thought was that it had the same speed and intensity as all the thrash metal I had been listening to, but it had more of an untamed fierceness about it. It was raw; the production was terrible, the playing was sloppy, but it sounded like pure unfiltered expression, and I instantly became obsessed. In a day, I had changed my view on writing songs; I was no longer concerned with writing to impress people and became more interested in writing what felt good to me. Writing punk rock songs comes naturally to us, and we love that we get to play them live for people to hear and hopefully enjoy for themselves.

What does it mean to you guys to be able to release your debut EP now?

It means a lot to us to finally get some music out. We loved writing these songs, and after playing them live for a while, it's so good to finally release them for people to listen to. We're also starting to write a little differently now, with our newer songs being slightly longer, taking elements of other genres and having more parts to them instead of always sticking to a typical verse and chorus structure. People have been really liking it, so we’re looking forward to releasing these songs hopefully next year!

You worked with Wundenberg's Studios to produce the EP. What was your first full-length experience recording like?

The owner of Wundenberg's Studios, Lewis, is an absolute legend, and we recommend any band to record with him. He really understood our songs, the sound we were going for and overall, he made the EP sound amazing. We are really happy with how it all turned out! He’s also great to work with, he made the whole experience so smooth and satisfying. If you're a band looking to record, I would strongly recommend recording with Wundenberg's. 

You’ve recently celebrated two years since your first gig as a band! What have been some of your favourite moments in Ledfly?

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been two years! Some of our favourite moments would definitely have to be playing that first gig at the Metro, our first time playing Unibar, meeting and playing with lots of incredible musicians in the local scene, playing some sick shows at Arthur Artbar that we will never forget, all the crazy memories we’ve shared so far with the LOLA crew and overall, just hearing people say they love what we’re doing, it means a lot to us. 
What energy are you hoping people bring to your EP launch at UniBar on August 29?

We just want people to come to the show, feel safe and have fun. We will be selling the EP on CDs, so make sure you cop one of them as well as a shirt. Should be a good night; we've got a pretty sick lineup sorted, so get keen and hopefully we’ll see ya there!

What’s next for Ledfly?

After this we wanna keep going. We’re planning to play as many shows as we can, write new material, release an album and hopefully start doing some interstate shows.
