Granite Island Discs: Isobella Caruso

The founder of Rebel Yell lists her fav songs of all time and spills the beans on her favourite music-related memory.

What five songs would you take to the island?

If you could only pick one, what would it be?

Ooh, this is a toughie! But I’m gonna have to go with ‘Right In Two’ by Tool from their record 10,000 Days. This song essentially changed my life as it gave me an entirely new perspective on the world. It’s a song I can always go back to when I need to ground myself and get a reminder of my core values and beliefs.

What’s your favourite album?

Jar by Superheaven (formerly known as Daylight) who hail from Pennsylvania in the US. I fucking love this band! Jar was released in 2013 and was a pretty ground-breaking record for the post-hardcore and alt-rock scenes at that time. The songs are super relatable to my own feelings and life experiences and it takes me back to a really fun period of my life, 22 years old and carefree.

What’s your favourite song by a South Australian band or artist?

‘Hume’ by Bad//Dreems from their album Dogs At Bay, which, shockingly, didn’t get a look into the Triple J Hottest 100. Rude.

Favourite music-related memory?

I consider myself pretty lucky to have dozens of music-related memories – from driving around international touring bands (including Nick Cave!) to seeing Turnstile play in Osaka when I was travelling in Japan. But I’d have to say that my favourite music-related memory is when my partner played the main stage of Soundwave in 2015! His band, A Ghost Orchestra, won a triple j Unearthed competition to open the main stage in Adelaide. It was the first year that they ran the festival over two days and they played on the same day as Marilyn Manson, The Smashing Pumpkins, Judas Priest, Slash and so many of our favourite bands at the time. Seeing their faces up on the big screens having the time of their lives was such a cool thing to witness! It's an experience that none of us will ever forget and goes to show how much local support slots at festivals mean to local bands.
