Housing Boom co-founder Dave Kameniar talks about his favourite songs and why Nas’ Illmatic is the greatest album of all time.

What five songs would you take to the island?

1. Pepe Bradock – ‘Deep Burnt’

2. Bellydance – ‘3 Days Man!’ (3AM Mix)

3. Soundstream – ‘All Night’

4. Barry White – ‘Baby, We Better Try To Get It Together’

5. Roger Sanchez – ‘Another Chance’

If you could only pick one, what would it be?

Probably changes weekly, so picking five was hard enough! Out of those, maybe either ‘Deep Burnt’ or ‘All Night’ – two tracks that really influenced me in the house music space.

What’s your favourite album?

Illmatic by Nas. I used to be big into hip hop late in high school and my early twenties. This record probably still takes the cake.

What’s your favourite song by a South Australian band or artist?

There are so many good South Australian artists, past and present, so again picking one is pretty difficult. ‘Hoping For’ by Bad//Dreems would have to be up there for me, and it has such a good film clip to go with it. Also, special mention for West Theb’s ‘Bible Camp’.

Favourite music-related memory?

Right before the pandemic kicked in, we hosted a Housing Boom party at Sugar Nightclub. The night was going along pretty steadily then a bit after midnight I remember – in the blink of an eye – the club had completely packed out. Seb Jay was playing and he dropped ‘Strings of Life’ by Derrick May and just about blew the roof off. Little did we know it was going to be our last party for about two years! Speaking of ‘Strings of Life’, I recall Horse Meat Disco playing the Soul Central version at Pitch 2019 late afternoon and re-summoned the sun, which was pretty bonkers. Maybe I should’ve put it in the top five…
