Country Arts SA’s 2026 Grindell's Hut Artist Residency is now open.

Taking place in the heart of the Vulkathunha – Gammon Ranges National Park, the three-week residency runs from Thursday 8 October to Wednesday 28 October. With no phone or internet access, the successful recipient has all the time in the world to pursue their chosen discipline against the background of the breathtaking Flinders Rangers.

Established over 20 years ago, the press release states that the Grindell's Hut Artist Residency allows the chosen artist to fully immerse themselves in “their practice among the natural beauty of Adnyamathanha Country, which is rich with cultural significance and a haven for endangered plants and animals.”

Speaking about the uniqueness of the residency, Country Arts SA visual arts manager Lauren Mustillo says, “It offers a profound, transformative experience where the land and its ancient stories become integral to the artistic process.”

“Grindell's Hut is more than just a space to create – it's a chance to reconnect, reflect, and be inspired by your surroundings.

“The residency’s setting, combined with the expertise and enthusiasm of the on-site park ranger team, creates an environment where creative possibilities are limitless.”

Last year’s recipient of Grindell's Hut was Victor Harbor singer-songwriter Rob Edwards, who used the residency to write and record new music.

“While singing the national anthem to 40,000 people before the Adelaide 500 main race with a fighter jet flying overhead is an insane experience, I definitely prefer the isolated nature of creating,” Rob says.

“Creating really requires time and space to happen, and it's hard to carve out that time when I’m normally so busy and going from thing to thing.

“This residency really opens the doorway to make it happen.”

The Grindell’s Hut Artist Residency is a partnership between Country Arts SA, and the Department for Environment and Water through the Vulkathunha‐Gammon Ranges National Park Co‐Management Board.
